It is nearly nine years since the National Referral Mechanism (NRM) for identifying victims of human trafficking was established and nearly two years since the NRM was extended to all victims of modern slavery in England and Wales. The question of how to accommodate, support and protect victims when they emerge from this process is assuming ever greater importance.

In this seminar Shu Shin Luh and Connor Johnston, together with Kate Roberts, will discuss access to housing and support for trafficking victims from public authorities, including local authorities, the Home Office and social services authorities.

The seminar will cover:

  • accommodation under the Housing Act 1996, Part 7 (as amended by the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017);
  • the new Homelessness Code of Guidance for Local Authorities, containing new material on dealing with victims of trafficking;
  • accommodation under the Localism Act 2011;
  • accommodation and support under the Care Act 2014;
  • the Human Trafficking Foundation's Victim Care Standards, which the Home Office has agreed to adopt in a forthcoming updated form.
