Shpresa, meaning hope in Albanian, is a registered charity and a user-led organisation, that advances the education and training of the Albanian speaking people in the UK, to enable them to take full and active roles in their communities. Albanian young people are in the top ten of asylum claimants and trafficked children and adults but they suffer from very high refusal and immigration detention rates.
Since 2010, Shpresa has supported over 200 asylum-seeking children and young people from Albania who have fled blood feuds, trafficking, domestic abuse, forced marriages, and homophobic violence and abuse. In 2016, they received the Marsh Award for their Outstanding Contribution to the Fight Against Modern Slavery (Practical Support and Assistance to Victims).
Shpresa also works with the Migrant and Refugee Children's Legal Unit (MiCLU) at Islington Law Centre on training 'Immigration Champions'. They give opportunities and support for children and young people to share their lived experience of the asylum system in the UK and they provide training to practitioners on child-centred practice. A number of Garden Court Chambers barristers also advise, assist and represent their clients.
This event will give a platform to some of the children and young people who are navigating the asylum system with the assistance of Shpresa. They will share their experiences of life in the UK, particularly reflecting on the challenges they have faced in securing adequate legal representation.
The seminar will cover:
- The support that young claimants need
- Re-evaluating 'looked after' support
- What support is available and needed on turning 18 as a refugee claimant
