The webinar will launch a new report from the Helen Bamber Foundation looking at disability as a basis for refugee protection and at accessibility and inclusion in the asylum process. Speakers will discuss disability as a particular social group, the interaction between recovery needs and refugee protection and global perspectives on disability and asylum. There will be a Q&A for discussion on key issues and next steps.

Speakers
David Neale, Legal Researcher, Garden Court Chambers
David carries out expert legal research in all areas of law, specialising in immigration and asylum law. He was called to the Bar by Inner Temple in October 2013 and completed his pupillage at Garden Court in October 2014. He was a practising barrister from 2014 to 2018 before becoming a Legal Researcher. David is a co-author of the report on disability and asylum law launched by the Helen Bamber Foundation (HBF).
Jennifer Blair, Co-Head of Legal Protection, Helen Bamber Foundation
Jennifer Blair is a co-author of the report on disability and asylum law launched by the Helen Bamber Foundation (HBF), she is a barrister in the legal protection team at HBF; she also provides front line advice for charities and as a lawyer specialises in representing vulnerable clients.
Ali Bandegani, Barrister, Garden Court Chambers Immigration Team
Ali Bandegani is expert in international protection, human rights and public law. Ali was a Legal Officer at the Refugee Legal Centre for several years before joining Garden Court Chambers in 2013. He is regularly instructed by leading solicitors and NGOs in judicial review and appeals at all levels. Ali’s expertise is well recognised through contributions to leading publications, and a proven track record of successfully developing the law for refugees from the Upper Tribunal (Immigration and Asylum Chamber) to the UK Supreme Court.
Professor Cornelius Katona, Medical and Research Director, Helen Bamber Foundation
Professor Cornelius Katona is the Medical Director at HBF and Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry, University of Kent. He has prepared more than 2000 expert medical reports and has been widely published in relation to refugee mental health.
Ricardo Pla Cordero, Protection Officer (Disability Inclusion), UNHCR
Ricardo Pla Cordero works as Protection Officer in the Division of International Protection at UNHCR, where he provides technical support on the rights of persons with disabilities under UNHCR mandate. As a development and humanitarian worker, Ricardo has experience in the design, implementation and monitoring of human-rights programming and in the development of policy and guidance on the rights of persons with disabilities in situations of conflict and disasters.
