This extended seminar will take a practical approach aimed to assist busy practitioners preparing for the changes that will affect adult social care from 1 April. It will cover all the main aspects of The Care Act Part 1.

Part I of the new Act modernises the law on adult social care in England, replacing current legislation with one Act and a single gateway to care and support.

This seminar will cover:

• The general duty to promote individual wellbeing
• The national eligibility criteria, the new duty to meet needs for care and support and how needs will be met
• Assessments, care and support planning, personal budgets and direct payments under the new framework

This seminar is aimed at practitioners in community care law and related areas requiring knowledge of community care law. However, it may also be of interest to those who are new to this subject area.

About the speakers

Bethan Harris specialises in community care law, social housing and Court of Protection work.

Amanda Weston practises in public and administrative law and the Court of Protection, and is the co-author of Jordan's Judicial Review: A Practical Guide.

Amina Ahmed practises in family law and is experienced in representing parents with disabilities and dealing with disputes over care planning for disabled adults.

Tim Baldwin, an experienced community care barrister, has expertise in cases involving mental health issues and his community care work benefits from his significant experience of acting in social housing cases.

Shu Shin Luh is an experienced public law practitioner whose practice covers the full range of social welfare law, with particular expertise in transitions to adult care, mental health, and cases raising immigration issues.

Beatrice Prevatt has a broad practice in housing including homelessness, Children Act and Community care accommodation issues and also sits as a deputy district judge. She is particularly noted for her expertise in acting for tenants on disrepair matters.

Stephen Knafler QC (Chair) is a public law expert who has been involved in many landmark decisions relevant to community care, civil liberties and housing. He also advises on adult and child social care policy and eligibility criteria.
