You are invited to share this opportunity to hear from, and to work with, one of the most eminent lawyers and teachers in the field of refugee law. His work is often referred to and relied upon, both in the UK Courts and Tribunals, and internationally. His most recent work, published in 2005, is The Rights of Refugees under International Law (Cambridge University Press, 2005). As the House of Lords made clear in the European Roma Rights Centre case (2004), refugee status and rights inhere only once an at-risk person successfully departs his or her own country. But despite the apparent simplicity of this rule, at least four hard problems remain:
? What are the implications of illegal entry or presence in the asylum state?
? How does one identify the country of reference in the case of stateless persons, persons with dual or multiple nationality, or those who can claim citizenship in a safe state?
? Are ?country of first arrival? rules legitimate constraints on the alienage requirement?
? How should ?sur place? claims be addressed, in particular those based on activities in an asylum state?
This one day training course is of particular interest to Immigration Judges and practitioners with good knowledge and experience in the field of refugee law. Places are limited and will be allocated on a ?first come first served? basis. The event carries 6 CPD points. A donation from the proceeds will be made to the Inderpal Rahal Memorial Trust.
