Asil Nadir was convicted in August 2012 at the Central Criminal Court of theft (said to be £146 million in total) in relation to Polly Peck International. He was sentenced to ten years' imprisonment.
Mr Nadir made an application under the the Council of Europe Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons 1983 for transfer to serve his sentence in Turkey. He was transferred last night.
Joanne Cecil was instructed to advise by Matthew Aldwinkle of Cartwright King Solicitors and subsequently led by Dinah Rose QC of Blackstone Chambers in judicial review proceedings challenging the initial refusal by former Secretary of State, Chris Grayling, to transfer him to Turkey.
The case raised issues relating to Articles 8 and 14 ECHR, common law discrimination and liaison with the Turkish Government and Ministry of Justice.
