This morning, Dexter Dias QC of Garden Court Chambers appeared on BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme to discuss his motivation for writing his new book on human rights, The Ten Types of Human.
Dexter Dias QC represented the mother of Gareth Myatt at the inquest into her son’s death following restraint by prison officers. Gareth was 15 years old and one of the youngest people to die in custody.
Discussing his motivation for writing The Ten Types of Human, Dexter said:
“I was asked a question which I couldn’t answer. It was from a mother whom I was representing. Her son had been killed by prison officers in a prison and she asked me ‘Why? Why did they do that to my son?’ And I didn’t really have an answer, or a good enough one for Pam and so I undertook to find out.”
The full interview is available to listen again on BBC iPlayer (2 hours and 51 minutes in).
The Ten Types of Human is in part based on cases he has conducted with colleagues at Garden Court and social justice causes chambers has supported, including fighting FGM and child slavery in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Ten Types of Human was published by Random House on 1 June 2017 and is available here and @DexterDiasQC.
Dexter Dias QC is a member of Garden Court Chambers’ Civil Liberties and Human Rights Team.
