The case against Seamus Daly, accused of murdering 29 people in the 1998 Omagh bombing, has been dropped. Mr Daly was represented by Brenda Campbell of Garden Court Chambers.
Mr Daly had been charged alone with 29 murders, along with causing the explosion and possessing the bomb. He was also charged with two additional counts relating to possessing explosives in Lisburn on 30 April 1998. After being arrested in 2014, Daly consistently denied any involvement in the bombing.
Northern Ireland’s Public Prosecution Service dropped the case after Brenda Campbell’s cross-examination of their key witness whose testimony was proven to be weak, inconsistent and devoid of any credibility.
Mr Daly will be freed today.
The collapse of this case lends further support to the families’ call for a public inquiry into the circumstances of the Omagh bomb - a call endorsed by the defendant and his representatives and supported by Amnesty International UK.
The case has been widely reported in the media, including by the BBC, The Guardian, The Independent and Sky News.
Brenda Campbell was instructed by Kevin Winters Solicitors. Brenda is a member of Garden Court Chambers’ Crime Team, winners of the Legal 500 Crime Set of the Year Award.
