Garden Court barrister Dexter Dias QC has an article published today by the Fabian Society on the use of pain in restraining detained children. Dexter was leading counsel for the family of Gareth Myatt in the inquest following Gareth's death during physical restraint by three prison officers.
Deeply concerned by the picture emerging before the coroner, Dexter subsequently researched child restraint at Cambridge University and continues to research penal and social justice issues at Harvard.
Dexter led Brenda Campbell also of Garden Court Chambers, and Gareth's family was supported throughout the proceedings by Deb Coles, co-director of the charity of INQUEST. Deb's views on the unacceptability of pain-infliction are also quoted in the article.
