Garden Court Chambers is delighted to announce that Duran Seddon, Edward Grieves and Irena Sabic of Garden Court Chambers, and Associate Tenant Anna Morris, have been formally appointed King’s Counsel today.
The title of KC is awarded to those who have demonstrated particular skill and expertise in the conduct of advocacy. KCs are appointed by The King, on the advice of the Lord Chancellor. He is in turn advised by an independent Selection Panel which receives and considers each application and makes recommendations as to appointment.
Duran Seddon (Call: 1994)
Duran Seddon practises in immigration, human rights and public & social welfare law. He acts for clients at all levels, from senior political and business figures to impoverished Chagos Islanders seeking residence and support in the UK.
Over the years, Duran has been involved in a range of high profile and significant cases. He has been instructed to assist, advise and represent in cases involving senior political and or business figures who have been subject to politically motivated prosecution for alleged offences of fraud and corruption.
Duran has been instructed in cases at all levels from the first instance up to the Court of Appeal, Supreme Court, European Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights.
Duran has made significant contributions to the stock of published knowledge in the areas in which he practices. As well as making past contributions to Macdonald’s Immigration Law & Practice and Halsbury's Laws, he is the main author and editor of the JCWI Immigration, Nationality and Refugee Law Handbook and other publications.
Edward Grieves (Call: 1995)
Edward Grieves specialises in cases involving counterterrorism, serious criminality, national security and complex closed material procedures which raise serious human rights and fairness issues, including financial sanctions, deprivation of citizenship, deportation, refusal of naturalisation and Control Orders/TPIMS and proscribed organisations.
Edward is an expert in cases before the Special Immigration Appeals Commission (SIAC). The Legal 500 describe Edward as a “visionary in terms of strategy on cases which have significant legal and geo-political implications. He understands SIAC better than any other barrister in practice."
Irena Sabic (Call: 2002)
Irena Sabic is a public law barrister with significant experience and expertise in planning, immigration and asylum, community care, unlawful detention and international law. Irena’s multi-disciplinary practice is rooted in civil liberties and human rights law.
Irena’s expertise is sought-after in individual cases and policy challenges concerning unlawful detention, victims of trafficking and the rights of vulnerable adults and children subject to immigration control. She has been involved in test case litigation relating to migrants’ rights concerning community care, welfare support, immigration detention, deportation and removal.
She regularly litigates unlawful detention cases, particularly those raising novel and complex points. She also has significant expertise in civil claims arising from unlawful detention and on behalf of victims of trafficking.
Irena is currently Chair of the Health Service Products (Pricing, Cost Control and Information) Appeals Tribunal.
Irena was part of a team of lawyers who won Highly Commended at The Lawyer Awards 2022 for Pro Bono Initiative of the Year. The initiative assisted members of the Afghan judiciary and legal profession to secure UK visas after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 2021.
Irena is a barrister board member of the Bar Standards Board.
Anna Morris (Call: 2006)
Anna Morris is an Associate Tenant at Garden Court Chambers and a tenant at Garden Court North Chambers. She was a tenant at Garden Court Chambers for many years.
Anna specialises in inquests and inquiries, civil liberties and human rights and private and public law claims involving public authorities. She is recognised as a Leading Junior by Chambers and Partners and The Legal 500 in all of her core practice areas.
Anna is frequently instructed in high profile and complex public inquiries and inquests. She has recently acted as Counsel to the Inquest in a complex death of a child. Anna is currently instructed as leading counsel in the Covid 19 Public Inquiry by a large number of individuals impacted by the C19 vaccine. She also represented a number of families in the Manchester Arena Inquiry. As junior counsel, Anna represented 14 families who lost loved ones at the historic Inquests into the Hillsborough Stadium disaster.
Anna is the Human Rights Editor of Stones’ Justices’ Manual (Lexis Nexis) and one of the authors of “The Protest Handbook” (2nd Ed 2020) (Bloomsbury Professional).
