Garden Court Chambers mourns the loss of our much-loved friend and Law Centre colleague Simon Mullings, Housing Team Leader at Hammersmith & Fulham Law Centre. Our thoughts are with his family.
Simon was at the forefront of everything in housing and homelessness law. He was a brilliant lawyer and a fierce fighter for all his clients. He was deeply committed to social justice and legal aid, and, despite having a busy caseload, was a dedicated and patient mentor and educator to everybody that he worked with. He contributed to numerous publications and worked prodigiously as co-chair of Housing Law Practitioners' Association (HLPA) for many years.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, he worked tirelessly with the Government and the Judiciary to establish guidance that meant tenants were not evicted, and those who were homeless were kept in suitable safe accommodation.
Simon was a stalwart of housing and social welfare law. He was an excellent lawyer to work with, colleagues recall his meticulous preparation. He was charming, kind, and generous of spirit. Simon was also the life of a conference or party, a wonderful presence to be around and share a drink with, and often generously gave his time to help with organising an occasion. A gifted speaker, his speeches were typically the highlight of an event, delivered with his trademark humour, modesty, and always making a point of acknowledging others.
