Garden Court Chambers is delighted to welcome the UN Women National Committee UK to Chambers. The Committee will be carrying out its work from Garden Court Chambers for the next six months.
The UN Women National Committee UK is the voice for the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women in the UK. The Committee supports the work of UN Women in its mission for gender equality and the empowerment of women globally. It focuses on influencing and raising awareness and funds to create change in the treatment of women and girls in the UK and throughout the world. This is achieved through working with the Government and parliamentarians, corporate partners and civil society.
Garden Court's Dexter Dias QC, who initiated this venture with Tuula Nieminen, says,
“I am particularly grateful to Tuula and her colleagues, former Chair Jan Grasty and current co-Chair Kathryn Colvin, for their relentless work in helping me drive this project through. It represents an exciting collaboration between two organisations dedicated to promoting social justice and the empowerment of women. In the last year Garden Court has been active in improving the protective mechanism for young women and girls at risk of FGM, has advised the UN on Violence against Women and Girls and has been at the forefront of work combatting Modern Day Slavery and human trafficking, where women are particularly vulnerable to sexual and other exploitation. We look forward to finding ways to work with UN Women NCUK to enhance the protection and empowerment of women.”
Dexter Dias QC is a human rights barrister at Garden Court who chaired and co-authored the Bar Human Rights Committee’s report to the Parliamentary Inquiry on FGM that proposed the FGM Protection Orders. The Protection Orders are now law and are being used by the High Court to protect at-risk girls from genital mutilation. Dexter has recently been active in the protection of vulnerable young people, particularly from child slavery and exploitation in armed combat groups in sub-Saharan Africa.
