James Scobie QC of the Garden Court Chambers Criminal Defence Team represented the defendant, Billy Mongey, instructed by John Kaye of Carson Kaye Solicitors and greatly assisted by Sophie Clarke of Carson Kaye Solicitors.
Michael Loughlin, 52, died four days after he was punched by Billy Mongey during a brawl between rival stag parties at a Butlin’s holiday camp in Bognor Regis on14 June 2019.
Mr Mongey told Lewes Crown court that he acted in self defence and hit Mr Loughlin after he attacked his friend, saying “there was no time to think” and “instinctively tried to protect my friends.”
Mr Mongey was arrested after Sussex Police viewed CCTV from the Butlin’s cameras. The bar was crowded with hen and stag parties at the time of the incident.
The jury took just over two hours to find Billy Mongey, 33, from Wandsworth not guilty of manslaughter.
