We are delighted to announce that Kathryn Cronin and Danielle Manson of Garden Court Chambers have both been shortlisted for the Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year Awards 2023 (LALYs).
Kathryn Cronin has been shortlisted for Legal Aid Barrister of the Year.
Danielle Manson has been shortlisted for Legal Aid Newcomer of the Year.
The LALYs continue to play a vital role in recognising and celebrating the lawyers who go the extra mile to achieve life-changing results for their clients. This is an outstanding and richly deserved achievement for two of our stars at the Bar, demonstrating their commitment to publicly funded work and access to justice.
Kathryn and Danielle's award submissions were supported by a host of stellar references from clients, campaigners, NGOs and counsel. We thank them all for taking time to complete such glowing references.
Kathryn Cronin
Kathryn has an extensive and varied immigration, asylum and family law practice. She is known for her representation of vulnerable clients, in particular asylum and human rights cases involving women and children. Kathryn was ranked for immigration (Band 1) and family law in Chambers & Partners UK 2023 and in Legal 500 2023.
Kathryn has expert knowledge of the intersection between family law and immigration law. She frequently advises in family proceedings concerning immigration and nationality issues as well as international adoptions, international surrogacy arrangements and transnational care and child placement arrangements. Kathryn has considerable experience in crossover areas where family or childcare cases involve associated issues on immigration status, or concerning immigration cases where there are family and childcare law and practice considerations.
She regularly provides advice to parties, local authorities or guardian's ad litem concerning the steps to be taken to resolve immigration problems whether for parents or for minors. Kathryn has represented many persons trafficked for sexual or domestic labour purposes and also undertakes leading work in public law.
She was for many years the senior author of Butterworth's Australian Immigration Law Service and the author of the entry on immigration, citizenship and refugee law in Halsbury's Laws of Australia. She is a joint author of Macdonald's Immigration Law and Practice 6th, 7th and 8th, 9th, 10th editions. She has published extensively on immigration, refugee, human rights and children's rights issues.
In addition Kathryn has undertaken training for organisations as diverse as the Law Society, law firms, local authorities, NGOs, ILPA, ATLeP, the Family Justice Council and the All Party Parliamentary Group on Refugees. She is the author of numerous conference and training papers.
Danielle Manson
Danielle represents defendants in all areas of criminal law and associated work. She has particular expertise defending children and young people and has appeared as a led junior and as a single advocate in cases of murder, attempted murder, rape, serious violence, fraud, the sale and supply of drugs and firearms offences. She regularly appears in the Court of Appeal of England & Wales.
Danielle is committed to providing accessible representation to children within the criminal justice system, in particular those who are victims of modern slavery and those who have been exploited as part of county lines drug dealing.
She previously sat on JUSTICE’s racial disparity in the Youth Justice system working party and is also a contributing author to the Youth Justice Legal Centre’s legal updates.
Danielle is experienced in representing individuals charged with criminal offences arising out of protests, including Extinction Rebellion, Stop the Arms Fair campaign and Black Lives Matter, and is committed to upholding convention rights and holding the state and police to account. She also has experience of Public Inquiries, having previously worked on the Undercover Policing Inquiry, as well as representing bereaved families in inquests.
She is often approached by the press to comment on issues concerning the English criminal justice system, appearing on BBC Radio 4’s Law in Action with Joshua Rozenberg, featuring in pieces for the Financial Times and New Statesman and authoring an article for British Vogue about protest rights following the death of George Floyd. She was also called upon to provide oral evidence to the Joint Committee on Human Rights as part of legislative scrutiny of the Police, Crime, Sentencing & Courts Bill.
Danielle is a Bar Council Social Mobility Advocate and a Trustee of the Kalisher Trust, which strives to diversify the Criminal Bar by assisting applicants from non-traditional backgrounds who have exceptional promise but modest means.
