The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Race and Community is hosting a Parliamentary event: 'Racial disproportionalities in the criminal justice system' on Monday 17th April 2023, from 6pm until 8pm. It will explore racial disproportionalities in charging, prosecution and judicial decision-making. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), legal professionals, and civil society campaigners will discuss why these disparities exist and what can be done to mitigate them.
The session will be co-chaired by Labour MPs Clive Lewis and Bell Ribeiro-Addy.
Keir Monteith KC of the Garden Court Crime Team and a University of Manchester Simon Fellow, is speaking at the event. Keir co-authored the report 'Racial Bias and the Bench' alongside lead academic author Professor Eithne Quinn from The University of Manchester.
It concluded the judiciary is institutionally racist, raising urgent questions about racial attitudes and practices in the justice system in England and Wales. The report draws on a survey of 373 legal professionals.
