Keir Monteith QC, of the Garden Court Chambers Crime Team, instructed by Graham Rishton of Mary Monsoon Solicitors, obtained a suspended sentence for his client accused of Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH) on a police officer.
The incident occurred in the aftermath of the England vs Italy Euro 2020 final. The prosecution sought to suggest the offence was related to football violence.
The legal team were able to put the offence in its appropriate context demonstrating that it was an impulsive strike, made in extreme emotional circumstances. The client had just witnessed his friend suffer a significant accident in which the client believed his friend had died.
A comprehensive mitigation package was presented to the Court by Keir Monteith QC which resulted in the client receiving a suspended sentence and the chance to spend Christmas at home with his family.
