Foreign National Prisoners' Rights: recent developments in law and practice
8 March 2007, 6.30pm - 8.00pm (1.5 CPD hours)
This will be a multidisciplinary seminar exploring current issues facing foreign national prisoners. Topics to be covered include bail in criminal proceedings, recommendations for deportation, detention post-sentence expiry, re-categorisation, immigration bail and challenging deportation or removal.
Speakers from Garden Court are Brenda Campbell, Louise Hooper, Maya Sikand and Ronan Toal.
Private Law Possession Proceedings and Public Law Defences: How do they work?
15 March 2007, 6.30pm - 8.00pm (1.5CPD)
This seminar will explore the scope for defending possession proceedings, brought by public authorities and social landlords, where the occupier has no legal right to remain in occupation. The speakers, Stephen Cottle and Jan Luba QC, will examine how a challenge to the decision to bring the proceedings can be raised by the occupier in the county court to defeat the claim.
Police claims seminar

This seminar, 'Police Claims: practice and procedure update', will look at recent important issues and cases in claims against the police. Speakers are Stephen Simblet and Leslie Thomas from Garden Court.

The speakers, Michael Ivers and Mark Muller QC, will illustrate how Article 6 forms an integral part of the system of justice in the emerging states and how it can still be used effectively in the domestic courts.
