Garden Court Chambers is delighted to announce that Michael Ivers has been appointed Queen’s Counsel.
Michael Ivers was called to the bar in 1991 and has developed a thriving practice in criminal defence and international human rights. He is frequently instructed to represent vulnerable clients. He has led in a number of trials for murder, terrorism, human trafficking, serious drug offences, revenue fraud and sexual offences.
Michael is former chair of the Kurdish Human Rights Project and Treasurer of the Bar Human Rights Committee. He appeared recently in two rare Grand Chamber ECtHR hearings representing notorious ETA terrorist, Del Rio Prada, the most significant case from Spain for 30 years; and Chiragov v Armenia, a landmark ruling by the ECtHR that the rights of Azeri Kurds had been violated when they were ‘ethnically cleansed’ from Nagorno Karabakh.
Michael will join the 20-strong team of Garden Court silks. He is a member of the Garden Court Chambers Crime Team, winners of the Legal 500 Crime Set of the Year 2015.
The new Queen's Counsel will formally become silks when they make their declaration before the Lord Chancellor at the ceremony on 22 February 2016.
