‘Ensuring Access to Rights for Roma and Travellers – The Role of the European Court of Human Rights’ is a handbook for lawyers defending Roma and Travellers by Marc Willers QC and published by the Council of Europe.
The handbook is intended to familiarise those providing legal assistance to NGOs, in particular to Roma and Traveller communities, with the European Convention on Human Rights and the workings of the European Court of Human Rights. If properly used, the Convention and the Court can act for the assertion of minority rights and their protection against injustice and abusive treatment. The handbook’s practical approach makes it a useful tool for both newcomers to the Convention and its case law and for experienced practitioners alike.
The handbook is edited and updated by Marc Willers QC of Garden Court Chambers and Siobhán Lloyd, with the contributions of Gloria Jean Garland, lawyer and human rights expert; Giovanni Bonello, former Judge of the European Court of Human Rights; and Luke Clements, Professor of Law and Social Justice at Leeds University and practising solicitor.
The handbook is structured in four sections; 1) Theoretical approach to the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms; 2) Practical approach and procedure; 3) Articles most frequently involved in Roma cases and the relevant jurisprudence; and 4) Practical exercises.
