Registry of the Supreme Court opens its doors

20th August 2009 the Registry of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom (the replacement for the House of Lords Judicial Committee- the Highest Court of Appeal in the UK) opened for business in the former Middlesex Guildhall, Parliament Square. Amongst the first cases filed (the 3rd) was the application to appeal in Central Bedfordshire Council v Taylor which had been drafted by David Watkinson, instructed by Pierce Glynn , solicitors (Court of Appeal Judgements 23/6/09) Taylor is the latest in the recent series of cases concerning the effect of Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights (right to respect for private and family life and the home) and the Human Rights Act 1998 on possession cases) and raises issues about the relevance of the occupiers' personal circumstances, the role of proportionality when deciding to seek possession and the courts 'powers to suspend possession orders against trespassers.
