UNICEF UK commissioned a team from Queen's University, Belfast to examine and identify lessons from the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in other countries. It marks the 21st anniversary of the UK ratification of the UN Convention on the Right of the Child on 16 December 2012.
Smita Shah was invited by UNICEF UK to sit on the Advisory Board I January 2012 to advise on the criteria for and areas of research and how mechanisms identified in other countries could be adapted for the UK context.
The report looks at implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in countries beyond the UK, it considers compelling evidence on the most effective, practical and impactful ways of embedding children's rights into domestic law and policy. The research and findings consider how different countries have chosen to give legal affect and implement the different articles of the Convention.
Smita says, ' I was delighted to be asked to sit on the Advisory Board for this exciting project. The report is a vital tool for those working in child rights in the UK. By highlighting workable practical examples of best practice taken from the 12 countries chosen for this purpose can only help us to improve the lives of children in the UK'.
