Child benefit for EU migrants whose children live in another country
On 7 January 2015 the Independent reported that, at a press conference following a meeting with Prime Minister David Cameron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel agreed to look at the issue of child benefit for EU migrants whose children live in another country.
However, the Independent also reports that, although EU diplomats believe Mr Cameron will make progress on the child benefit issue, they think he will find it harder to achieve other proposals that include a four-year wait before EU migrants can claim child benefit and tax credits or secure social housing, a requirement that jobseekers to return to their home country if they have not found work after six months and a requirement that EU migrants have a job offer before they come to Britain.
