The Legal Aid, Punishment and Sentencing of Offenders Act 2012 removed legal aid for the preparation of welfare benefit appeals at the first-tier tribunal. However, rumours of the death of publicly funded social security litigation are exaggerated. Legal aid still remains available in a number of cases.
